THE MODERN SHAG
Joey Scandizzo, Co-Creative Director of ELEVEN Australia:
“The modern shag is making a big comeback in 2020. We’re going to see more lived-in, shaggy crops across straight, wavy and curly hair this season. The inspiration comes from a mix of ’70s icon Farrah Fawcett’s feathered hair, as well as a graduated shag finish, to give it a bit of a Joan Jett’s rock’n’roll style. To get the look, ask your stylist for long layers that start at the top and work their way down, but don’t thin your hair out too much, the strength in the shape comes from keeping the ends blunt and exterior strong.”

THE SOLID BANGED BOB
Anthony Nader, Salon Owner and Creative Director at RAW Anthony Nader:
“This haircut isn’t for the faint-hearted as it only oozes confidence and strength. Model Aylah Peterson’s solid bangs at Saint Laurent are a statement and have presence—a far cry from the barely-there-bangs that are soft and textured. This look is also defined by keeping the strands all one length, which gives it a ‘glass hair’ finish. The key with this haircut, is to make sure your hairdresser ensures the ends are cut blunt and solid. Leave softness and texture at the door. This look works a treat with hair strands on the finer side.”

PLAITS, PLEASE
Barney Martin, Owner & Director of Barney Martin Hair:
“When it comes to this look, virtually anything goes. We’re seeing tiny delicate braids being introduced into polished ponytails and chunky plaits added to up-dos. Plaits are having a moment and turn what could be an everyday look into something with a bit more excitement.”

THE MULLET
Byron Turnbull, Co-Founder and Director of Goldie Sydney:
“Miley Cyrus has really stepped up the hair game by bringing back the ’70s Mullet. The heavy fringe combined with the choppy layers and effortless texture always makes this style look super cool.”

BIG BLOW DRY GLAMOUR
John Pulitano, Creative Director and Co-Owner of Headcase Hair:
As proven by Lanvin’s autumn/winter 2020/2021 fashion show, the big blow dry is back—back but in a 2020 cooler and edgier version. To recreate the look, apply a volumising spray to dry hair and blow dry with a round bristle brush. Take a large tong and separate the hair in large sections, then set around the tong as if you were putting rollers in, making sure that you leave the ends out. Finish with setting hairspray to accentuate the waves around the face.”

THE UNDONE RICH GIRL
Anthony Nader, Salon Owner and Creative Director at RAW Anthony Nader:
“The beauty of this look comes from its gorgeous, natural-looking effect. It’s all about the humble blow dry finish of ‘not giving a damn’ about those carefully calculated fly-aways—and let’s not forget the haphazard centre-part line. There’s a very fine line, however, of your mane appearing ‘boho’ if your ends aren’t snipped clean, so be careful that you don’t leave your ends wispy and maintain your regular hair appointments.”

THE ’90S BOB
Joey Scandizzo, Co-Creative Director of ELEVEN Australia:
“This short crop is the ultimate style of the season and bang on the ’90s trend that’s flooding our Instagram feeds and runways. This cut looks great polished and glossy, or tousled for a more textured and lived-in look. Bonus? It’s really versatile, and looks great with a fringe or one-length and parted straight down the middle.”

THE POWER PONY
Anthony Nader, Salon Owner and Creative Director at RAW Anthony Nader:
“When you’re having a bad hair day and want your work colleagues to think ‘she’s got this’, this is the look to pull out. Think: high voltage, mega-watt shine with a ‘power side part’ to score major points in the boardroom (or wherever you go, really!). No matter what your hair length is, the focus is over-the-top shine, a clean partline and a low ponytail. You can even start this look on one or two-day-old locks. Simply use your shine spray and work it through from roots to ends evenly and secure at the nape of the head.”

THE LONG PIXIE FRINGE
John Pulitano, Creative Director and Co-Owner of Headcase Hair:
“A long pixie fringe on long, layered hair—especially on brunettes and bleach blondes—gives your look a bit of a rock-chic vibe. Worn tucked behind the ears or worked back can give the illusion of a short haircut. The key for style is to make sure that you look after your bangs and give it a trim on a regular basis.”

TWO-TONE ’90S HAIR
Barney Martin, Owner & Director of Barney Martin Hair:
“Although it’s technically a colour, and not a cut, there’s no denying that this look has been making a quiet comeback, thanks to the inimitable Dua Lipa and her extreme take on this ’90s look. It’s also been visible on many fashion week runways, most notably at London Fashion Week, and at Dries van Noten’s Paris show, courtesy of hairstylist Sam McKnight.”

THE FLICKED OUT BOB
John Pulitano, Creative Director and Co-Owner of Headcase Hair:
“Spotted at both Chanel’s spring/summer ’20 couture show and Loewe’s autumn/winter RTW ’20/’21 runway, the short, flicked-out bob is another look that’s having a moment. Slightly textured at the ends, [it can be] flicked up either naturally or accentuated with a blow dry, flipping the end up instead of under. Think: chic ’50s housewife.”

GENDER NEUTRAL
Joey Scandizzo, Co-Creative Director of ELEVEN Australia:
“Nothing is ‘one size fits all’ and that goes for your hairstyle as well! Gender neutral haircuts for curly, wavy, straight and grey hair—and everything in between—are happening everywhere now. From buzz cuts to vibrant colours, we are seeing fewer rules about what is considered masculine and feminine. People are starting to challenge traditional hairstyles and opt for ones that have, throughout history, been associated with the opposite sex. [This season] you’ll see flipped, shorter crops, modern mullets and lived-in-longer cuts. Celebrities like Justin Bieber, Tilda Swinton and Ruby Rose are great examples.”
