From Power Pixies to Posh Spice’s new do.

There’s nothing quite like a fresh haircut to really give you that burst of confidence. And with the warmer weather finally staying put, there’s never been a better time to book that hair appointment. So with spring well and truly here, we’re seeing a departure of glassy brunette locks and traditional bobs we saw throughout winter and moving towards long layers, power pixies and relaxed bangs.
Creative Director Anthony Nader from Raw Anthony Nader hair salon in Sydney’s Surry Hills spoke to Women’s Health about the spring hair trends he’s predicting will be huge this year.
“Spring is all about shedding the old and stepping into the new – and what better way to do that than with a fresh, fabulous haircut? These haircut trends are your ticket to shaking off the winter blues and stepping into sunnier days with confidence,” he says.
The top spring hair trends for 2024
90’s long layers
According to Anthony, the long, luscious layers and floaty curtain bangs were huge during the early-to-mid ‘90s (he saw it first hand!) and it continues to be a hot trend for spring.
“A bouncy, full blowout like Cindy Crawford, Julia Robert’s and J’Lo are your go-to’s for inspiration. You can easily throw this look up with lots of bits falling out for a fun look or wear it down for maximum volume and shape,” he shares.
“I love when my clients have this haircut as it really does give them versatility with endless styling options. Volume will be queen this season as layers will also add volume to thin fine hair, balance the weight and provide movement for thick dense hair strands.”
The VB long bob
Last month, style iconic Victoria Beckham was spotted sporting a fresh to new hairstyle that’s set to become one of spring’s most popular looks.
Dubbed the “lob” (or long bob), she’s in good company with other celebs donning the hairdo like Salma Hayek to Penélope Cruz.
“Featuring a centre parting and blunt finish, Victoria Beckham’s new cut grazed her shoulders and was styled in a tousled texture through the mid-lengths and ends. While she isn’t one to switch up her look regularly, the new cut felt effortless, youthful and super cool for the designer and mother of four,” Anthony shares.
“A departure from her signature longer length which I believe always made her hair look on the finer side whereas now that it’s shorter her hair strands will always appear thicker. Those of you with finer hair, I’m all in with going shorter and blunt.”
Relaxed bangs
Say hello to your new bestie for hair inspiration – Daisy Edger Jones.
While Daisy still sports her iconic retro-inspired curtain bangs (as first spotted in the TV hit, Normal People) they have been blended into her lived-in waves to create a more classic, effortless look without compromising on volume.
“Her bangs perfectly frame her face adding movement to Daisy’s hair and even working to accentuate her cheekbones having been cut right above the cheek. As a rule, if any of my clients are wanting to try bangs for the first time, I like to edge in a shape that is a little longer. Rather than lopping off on the shorter side,” says Anthony.
“I have a complete weakness for bangs that flutter below the eyelashes and graze beautifully over the cheekbones!”
The Carnaby Street bowl cut
It’s the bowl cut, but not as you know it. In the past, especially in the ‘60s, bowl cuts were cut super precisely and relied heavily on a great blow dry. Times have changed. I mean, who has time to sit at the salon once a week for a blowout!
“I’ve been embracing them again for spring 2024, but this time round allowing clients’ natural texture to shine through. Embracing your hair’s natural texture has always been my philosophy. This shape of the cut makes this a haircut that feels – and looks – beautifully free and tousled,” Anthony says.
“Unlike its derided old-school counterpart, the modern bowl is softer and can be pushed forward, brushed to the sides or tucked behind the ears if required.”
The Power Pixie
Anthony considers the pixie the ultimate marker of individuality. With a woman’s self-worth often tied to her hair, he acknowledges there’s a cathartic release in being able to shed that weight. Both physically and mentally.
“That’s why the pixie cut and its implications of personal power will forever be the ultimate statement-making hairstyle,” he shares.
His biggest Power Pixie inspiration? Zoe Kravitz.
“She oozes strength, femininity and power all at the same time. I love that such a short haircut can look so feminine and delicate. The secret is keeping the haircut around the face soft and razored and never blunt and short. This too will grow out beautifully,” he adds.
