Summer swim season is all about salty, glowing skin, dishevelled hair, sun-kissed freckles, and relaxed smiles . . . the absolute best that natural beauty can give. It’s a nonchalant nod to effortless hot weather textures that makes us feel beautiful, and we radiate from the inside out. This season we’re embracing the sexiness of the ’70s metallic trend and showing you how you can make this look all yours for the Summer.
Up-and-coming model stunner Juliette Perkins lent her beauty to our latest #popaushoots and the images are sensational. Juliette, a New Zealand native, embodies the essence of Summer’s gorgeousness — long, healthy hair, a wicked sense of humour and the most infectious gap-toothed grin.
We enlisted the help of celebrity mane man Anthony Nader, from Raw salon in Sydney, who created the ultimate Summer texture using luxury salon brand, Oribe. He has one tip you need to remember for incredible hair: “Feed your hair moisture, moisture and more moisture! Your strands will thrive on this and need this, so invest in a leave-in conditioner and spray in daily, then style your hair as you would normally do.”
Read on to see Juliette up close during our secret-location shoot on one of Sydney’s southern beaches, and get the secrets behind her sexy, beachy locks.
For our shoot Anthony used Oribe Beach Wave Spray ($55), saying it was “enhancing and encouraging the natural movement of Juliette’s beautiful locks to look more ‘beached’.” He kept her strands fresh with Oribe Cote d’Azur ($28), saying, “I use this literally on all my clients in the salon and on shoots. It’s a refresher and makes your hair strands feel like they’ve just been to the dry cleaners and brand spankin’ new! It also has a UV filter which is perfect for the Summer months ahead and controls static.”
Anthony also filled his spray bottle with straight sea water and used this to add an extra dimension of natural wave. You’ll find your products work perfectly with the natural salty water — sea-water swims are your new Summer-styling tool!
Up and Away
Anthony says once you have enhanced your natural texture you can then push your hair back into a low messy bun or French twist for going out after the beach. “These two styles are definitely my go-to for the next couple of months,” says Anthony, who is a fan of low-maintenance, naturally sexy hair. Flattering on everyone he says, “Up-styles show off beautifully-defined facial features and elongate the neckline as well, which is what we all want at the end of the day.”
1. Start with your salty, beachy textured strands.
2. Scrape your hair back from around your hairline and twist low at the nape of the neck.
3. Twist your hair around itself, like you’re creating a bun, but leave 5-10cm of length out.
4. Finish by using bobby pins, or a hair elastic, to hold your twisted, textured chignon in place.
Beach to Bar
“The beauty about the products I used on Juliette, is that you apply them on damp hair and by the time the hair dries, you have the most beautiful beach-textured waves,” Anthony explains. This should take you straight to the bar for a relaxed look, or you can opt for the twisted up ‘do above, if you prefer to keep your locks out of the way.
