The internet has given us so much; online shopping, a whole new meaning of piracy, memes to win office group emails and, more recently, a picture of Justin Bieber’s penis that no-one asked for.
So while the World Wide Web is home to the weird and the wonderful, it’s also home to some seriously hilarious beauty tips.
We asked the experts to weigh in on 15 of the wackiest tips we found online to see whether any actually have some merit. The lesson: don’t always believe what you see on the internet (unless you read it in Honey).
#1 Jelly makes a good lip stain. Pour the powder mix into a bowl and wet a Q-Tip with water. Then, dip the Q-Tip into the powder and apply it directly to your lips
“Personally I wouldn’t be bothered with this one. Seems like a lot of effort for a lip stain. And what a waste of jelly!” – make-up artist Naomi McFadden.
#2 After applying make-up, step into a hot bath for 10 minutes. The steam will help set make-up, while the moisture will help skin look plump and fresh
“I can see the benefit in this. Steam is really good for your skin. However, who has the time to step in a hot bath for 10 minutes after doing your make-up? Plus the heat may melt your make-up and cause it to move rather than set it.
“Try heating up the shower before you get out for that burst of steam and pop your moisturiser on while your skin is still damp. This will give you that mega dose of moisture BEFORE applying your make-up, helping your skin look fresh and plump.” – McFadden
#3 If you have super straight hair and you want curls that last, use aluminium foil and a flat iron to curl your hair
“I’m sorry what?! This has to be a craze and I’m not falling for it – the hair is going to burn along with the aluminium due to all that heat. Ladies with delicate coloured hair please run the other way if your hairdresser tries this fad in the salon.” – hairstylist and owner of Raw salon Anthony Nader
#4 Dab a bit of flaxseed oil on your lash line every night to repair lash damage and stimulate growth
“Haven’t heard of this before but can’t hurt to give it a try. I often suggest for people to use natural oils such as rosehip as an eye make-up remover as it’s much gentler on that sensitive eye area. So if you try it and it works, yay for fuller longer lashes.” – McFadden
#5 Lady Gaga reportedly uses sticky-tape to remove her make-up
“This is just crazy talk. The skin on your face, especially areas around your eye is so sensitive and by using sticky tape to remove your make-up you’re most likely going to remove a little bit of your skin. Make-up removing should be a gentle exercise, stick to your make-up remover ladies, don’t try this at home.” – McFadden
#6 Reduce frizz by drying your hair with a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel
“It’s a simple trick and doesn’t cost the earth. Just make sure your t-shirt is 100 percent cotton.” – Nader
#7 Add gelatin to your shampoo to make your hair thicker
“Jackpot again, but just remember a little goes a long way.” – Nader
#8 Try adding a few drops of peppermint oil to your lip gloss to plump lips
“Most lip plumpers use an active ingredient that actually irritates the lips to cause the plumping effect. Peppermint oil is actually often one of these active ingredients so absolutely give it a go. The irritation sounds scary but it won’t hurt or have a lasting effect.” – McFadden
#9 To remove a streaky fake tan, use baking soda
“Yes! Baking soda is good for so many things other than just baking, and sorting out streaky fake tan is one of them. It’s also a cheap and fast option. You can also use it as a face exfoliator and to whiten your teeth.” – McFadden
#10 To promote hair growth, eat 3-4 Brazil nuts every day
“Nuts are good protein, especially the Brazilian ones. They certainly can’t hurt the hair so go get yourself some nuts and throw a couple into your breakfast each morning.” – Nader
#11 To cure a sunburn, take a warm bath in black tea
“I haven’t heard of the tea bath for sunburn but tea is known to reduce inflammation, so I would definitely give this one a go. I doubt it will cure the sunburn but it’s definitely going to ease the pain.” – McFadden
#12 Nicole Kidman, according to the internet, pours cranberry juice over her hair after shampooing to boost shine and enhance colour
“Maybe, maybe not. Berries are full of antioxidants and can help in repairing your hair strands until you can get to the salon to purchase what your hairdresser recommends.” – Nader
#13 Rubbing your face with a potato dries up oily skin
“I am all for foods for our skin. Natural remedies can do wonders for it. I’m often mixing some concoction or other with the contents of my fridge. I haven’t heard the potato for oily skin remedy before but if someone says it works definitely give it a go.” – McFadden
#14 You can tame flyaways with deodorant
“I’m going to try this technique in the morning with my roll-on and revert back. I’ve never heard of this one in all my twenty something years of hairdressing!” – Nader
#15 Mayonnaise is an amazing conditioner for hair, giving it extra shine
“SERIOUSLY CRAZY! Next time I’m out to lunch I’m going to order a side of mayonnaise and condition my hair at the same time.” – Nader
