WHAT IT’S REALLY LIKE TO WORK ON A VICTORIA’S SECRET SHOW

2015 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show - Hair And Makeup

Behind all the lingerie, supermodels and barrel curls, there’s a whole lot of hard work

Hairstylist Anthony Nader has his “Carrie Bradshaw”moment come true when he was booked in 2000 to work on the Angel’s hairstyles under the the direction of Orlanda Pita. Gisele Bündchen was the hot-ticket super for the millennium year.

We begged him for the details on what it was really like and he very kindly spilled the beans …

ALL THE PICS FROM THE VICTORIA’S SECRET FASHION SHOW

IT WAS REALLY HARD PACKING FOR THE SHOW

“I made sure my hair kit was packed correctly then I pulled it all apart and packed it again. I think I had every shape and colour of rippled bobby pins in my kit and could have opened up a hair supplies shop, just from my industry go-to, large black Burton bag, that gives us away on the street.
I think a touch of my OCD had me in full swing and let’s face it, when you’re working with these VS famous models you need to be more than prepared to pull out all the stops and tricks to please them and pray you might even get the slightest cheeky grin from the Gisele Bundchen’s or Heidi Klum’s of the world!”

THERE IS SOME SERIOUS TRICKERY THAT GOES INTO THOSE BEAUTY LOOKS

“VS models [have] up to a metre… Yes, a metre of hair pieces stuck onto their scalp to get that trademark, VS look that we all want. I was amazed at all the variations of colours and hair lengths on offer. I was in heaven!”

VS MODELS AREN’T THE PRINCESS TYPE

“I didn’t have any bad experiences with any of the models being princesses at all and they were all really quiet humble and grounded funny enough. They know they’ve won the big lottery ticket … and most importantly they know where it can and will take them.”

HOT TONGS ARE ESSENTIAL

“A variation of different sized hot tongs are used to create that undone/not contrived trademark hair, taking big sections of hair for a natural look. Remember it’s about a sexy movement in the hair and not curls.”

IT’S JUST AS CRAZY BACKSTAGE BEFORE THE SHOW AS YOU IMAGINE IT IS

“The chaos backstage is the best and the energy is crazy – it’s hard to explain.
The models are looking so incredible and when those iconic wings went on … that for me was gold.”

BUT IT’S AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE

“When the show was over and I left the side door exit, I remember I had the biggest smile and thought ‘wow what a dream come true and how fortunate am I to have worked on this show!?’ … Then my real-life kicked in only minutes later when, I caught that overcrowded E train back down town again to a thing called ‘reality’.”

HOW TO GET VICTORIA’S SECRET HAIR

Victoria’s Secret models are known for their luscious, shiny locks and now you can re-create the look.

We spoke to Australian stylist Anthony Nader from RAW hair in Sydney for his tips on nailing Victoria’s Secret volume and bounce at home.

1. Build volume
The first step to achieve the Angels’ sexy undone hair is to apply a foam (or mousse product) instead of a sea salt. “A sea salt spray which will make your strands look dull and fluffy,” Nader says. “A foam will keep your strands more polished and smooth”.

2. Always use a bristle brush
When your blowing out your hair use oversized radial boar bristle brushes. “These brushes ensure a smoother finish, give more body and will make even the frizziest of hair controllable because of the bristles,” he notes.

3. Add shine
“When clients want this famous hair style I always spray a light weight shine spray on the mid lengths and ends only and skip the roots,” Nader tells us. “By adding in the spray on damp hair, it absorbs into each hair strands far better than on dry hair.”

4. Invest in two hair curling irons
To achieve the Angels’ signature bounce you’ll need two different large sized barrel tongs. “After drying your hair, take haphazard chunky two to three inch vertical sections and wind each away from your face,” he says. Apply the large tong to every second section. “When your done shake the curls out to become large rippled waves,” he says.

4. Backcomb
This is the key step for added volume and height! “Back comb the top area around the part-line and crown and give them a light spray,” Nader notes.

5. Add more hair
For even more bounce, try adding volume with hair extensions. “Visit a wig store and match your own colour,” Nader suggests. You can personalise hair pieces with baby clips so you can easily add them any time you want, giving the illusion of thicker hair. “Trust me this is what all the Victoria’s Secret Angels have on the runway!”

6. Refresh your colour
“Ask your hairdresser to lighten up a few block pieces around the face,” Nader suggests. A different variety of colour tones and highlights can create the impact of thickness and added texture.

HAIR HOW-TO WITH ANTHONY NADER: ROCKABILLY CHIC

ANTHONY-NADER

Bouncy, ambulance flouncy hair may make us feel like a total glamour pusses but there’s nothing quite like a sharp, thumb strong, dosage directional masculine up ‘do when it comes to making us feel like a million bucks.

When creating the look on one of our favourite exports, Ruby-Jean Wilson, in the photo above, hair god Anthony Nader was after an androgyny that carries with it a air of mystery:

“When we shot this image in the photographer’s house in Brooklyn, NYC, I wanted a tough ‘boy/girl/boy’ feeling that still oozes sensuality, something which is always my priority for hair. “

Pay close attention to Anthony’s the steps below and you’ll have yourself looking dapper just in time for the weekend.

1. My aim for this hairstyle was to maximise high mega-watt sheen so I used Oribe Brilliance Shine Shampoo & Conditioner to start working in the gleam from the very beginning.

2. I always rinse hair with the coolest possible water temperature as this not only controls the thickest of hair cuticles for manageability but also keeps your locks closer to the scalp – trust me on this one, it’s my saviour for keeping hair compact and less fly away.

3. Blot your hair really dry first and then blast 80 percent dry to remove excess moisture.

4. Squeeze a 20-cent piece size of your Oribe Rockhard Gel into your palms and work that through from roots to ends all over and comb into desired placement to create your rockabilly quiff.

5. For extra gleam and polish, I used a few pumps of Oribe Gold Lust and swiped this luscious oil into sides and top of the hair.

HAIR HOW-TO: ANTHONY NADER SHOWS YOU HOW TO GET BAD GIRL TEXTURE

Hair God Anthony Nader recently showed us how to achieve angelic, bouncy waves. This week, it’s all about attitude with roughed up, lived-in texture. He says: “This look is pulled from a shoot I did for Vogue Mexico, shot in Brooklyn at a skate park, of all places. How glamorous are the surroundings and who would have thought? In turn, I wanted my models hair to look more ‘Undone’ and relaxed to avoid looking over-the-top ‘Done.’”

Get the look with these steps:

1. After shampooing and conditioning, squeeze a golf ball size of Oribe Grandiose Plumping Mousse into your palms and rake through from roots to ends.

2. Blast your hair 80 percent dry with your hairdryer to cut down your drying time and then clip the top half away and smooth over the bottom layers with a medium size round brush and sculpt your sections with a curve so it has a bend.

3. Unclip the top section, place in your haphazard side part, and do the same technique as underneath, making sure you have that beautiful curve ever-present.

4. If you’re happy with how much bend you have, you can go ahead and apply your Après Beach Spray lightly by tipping your head over and scrunching the product in to give the hair more of a gritty beach texture. Otherwise, if you want more kick, grab your one-and-a-half size hot tongs and give your mid-lengths a bend all over for more movement.

5. Now rake out your tonged bends for a more natural result and go ahead and spray your Après Beach Spray now and shake it out and you’re good to go.

HAIR HOW-TO WITH ANTHONY NADER: BOUNCY BLOWOUT

Anthony Nader is showing How To get bouncy blowout in few easy steps.

Over the next four weeks, cheap our favourite hair maestro Anthony Nader will be showing us how to get editorial hair just in time for the weekend. Today, treat we’re getting über-glam volume with a touch of the 70s – think Farrah Fawcett but circa 2015. He says of the look, “I wanted to create the most voluminous, luxurious hair on this shoot I did in New York with Victoria Secret model Bregje Heinen.”
Volume is often something we struggle with at home. It either ends up falling flat by the time we’ve walked out the door or otherwise looks like we’ve just rolled out of bed (and not in the good way!). But this is all about to change. Get a hold of your hair dryers and let Anthony show you the light:

1. Prep your hair strands first with Oribe Shampoo & Conditioner Magnificent Volume to plump up the volume, then blot dry rather than rubbing with your towel.

2. Spray in your Royal Blowout all over to smooth over even the roughest of hair strands – it also doubles up as a heat protector – then give your roots and mid-lengths a spray with Volumista Mist to ensure the extra oomph. Comb through with your wide-tooth comb and now shake your hair dry with your hairdryer at 80 percent to cut down your drying time.

3. Divide your hair from ear to ear, clip the top section away, and smooth over the underneath section with your large round brush. Lift each section up towards the sky for maximum lift and then unravel into a twist.

4. Do this all the way around then unclip the top section, place in your deep side part, and do the same method on top until dry.

5. Now grab your one-inch hot tong and take two-inch horizontal sections from the nape area, all the up to your part line, and pin as you go (as this sets the shape until cooled down). Make sure you also wind each section up towards the sky as this is how you get maximum volume.

6. Once your hair has cooled down, unclip your coiled rolls, flip your head over, and brush your hair strands from nape to the front, which encourages voluminous waves, and spray your roots with Oribe Superfine Hairspray.

7. Pop your head back upright and place your hair into your desired shape with your fingers, give a spray again to the top layers, and you’re ready for your night out with girlfriends totally envious of your hair.
